Always in the headlines it seems electric cars now have to content with falling global sales. Tesla has seen deliveries drop and Ford have cut production on the much vaunted F150 lightning. Another body blow for the sector?
Cost is certainly a factor, but the ‘running out of power’ anxiety and lack of charging infrastructure remain concerns for those looking to convert to electric. So, the chart below from Bloomberg caught my attention. It shows how far electric and plug-in hybrids are driven relative to fuel burning cars in various markets. Not a global study, but it’s interesting that in these markets owners have been driving significantly further than their petrol counterparts. It seems once you own an electric car, this anxiety seems to disappear (bar the US, unsurprisingly).
Meanwhile, turning to the UK. Carbon Brief’s Simon Evans shares The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders latest numbers, showing sales figures for the UK – petrol flat, diesel down and all forms of electric vehicle up in double digits over 2023. Perhaps the reports of electric vehicle demise has been somewhat exaggerated.
Thank you James Saunders for the note.
